Towards Enhancing Education and Research in the Life Sciences

Together with Life Science educators from the MENA region, Serageldin is invited to participate in the planning meeting for the project by the National Research Council of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences to design and develop a framework for an international series of faculty development workshops, called “educational institutes”.

Serageldin Receives NAS Public Welfare Medal

In January 2011, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), in Washington DC, selected Ismail Serageldin to be the 2011 recipient of their most prestigious award: the Public Welfare Medal. On Sunday 1 May, the medal was presented to Serageldin in an award ceremony held during the Academy’s 148th annual meeting, where he got a standing ovation after his acceptance speech.

American Philosophical Society Votes Serageldin as Member

The members of the American Philosophical Society (APS) have voted Ismail Serageldin into membership. This high honor was conferred to Serageldin in recognition of his extraordinary accomplishments in fields of intellectual endeavor and public service. He was nominated and elected by his peers in the Society, which has seven hundred members of eminent scholars from a wide variety of disciplines.

Encyclopedia of Life Meeting at Smithsonian

As a member of the Executive Committee of the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL), Serageldin attends the committee meeting held at the Smithsonian Institution this week. The Committee members, who are senior figures from the cornerstone institutions of the EOL, convene to consider EOL accomplishments thus far, and to discuss future plans and goals.

The theme of this year’s Shakespeare Conference at the Library of Alexandria was “The Politics of Power in Shakespeare’s History Plays”. The event was attended by a great number of students and lovers of literature, who sat in rapt attention as Serageldin gave his annual presentation on this universally celebrated occasion.

The moral power of non-violence was never more ably deployed for the cause of more freedom, more justice and to lay the foundations of better tomorrows. By the moral force of their solidarity, and the nobility of their cause, they challenged all expectations and triumphed.

On CNN: The Will of the People Saved the Library

Speaking with CNN’s Nic Robertson, Serageldin described how opponents and supporters in Egypt’s protests, together with the BA staff, joined hands in protecting the Library. Walking with Robertson through the Library hallways, pointing out the treasures, old and new, he told how all this had been at the mercy of the crowd, and how Egypt’s youth, armed only with moral power, saved the Library from rampage.

The world has witnessed an unprecedented popular action in the streets of Egypt, led by Egypt’s youth with their justified demands for more freedom, more democracy, lower prices for necessities and more employment opportunities. Elected by the fifty-two professors of Collège de France and officially appointed by President Sarkozy, as Professor to the International Chair Savoirs contre pauvreté (Knowledge Against Poverty), for the academic year 2010-2011, Serageldin gave his inaugural lecture to a very large audience last November, and returns this week to Collège de France to give a course of lectures over the month of January.

Africa Prize Awarded to Serageldin in a Grand Ceremony

In a grand ceremony held in the State House, Accra, Ghana’s Excellence Awards Foundation awarded Serageldin the Lifetime Africa Achievement Prize. The celebration was attended by HE President John Atta Mills of Ghana, HE Vice President John Dramani Mahama, and HRH Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, King of Ashanti, the biggest tribe in Ghana.

Serageldin Gives Inaugural Lecture at Collège de France

The Shape of Tomorrow

Ismail Serageldin has finally written up a first version of his extremely well-received lecture delivered at the NSF on September 21, 2010. Earlier versions had been delivered as lectures at Harvard (2009) and then at the Supreme Council of Culture in Egypt (February 7, 2010) and then at the Egyptian Academy of Science, as the special Okasha lecture in Cairo (1st of July 2010)

The Shape of Tomorrow

This monograph is now entitled The Shape of Tomorrow. The first part of which is devoted to the profound transformation that I discern in the very structure of knowledge and how humans relate to it. I have identified seven such major transformations and I have taken to referring to them as the “Seven Pillars of the Knowledge Revolution”, and the second part is devoted to the implications of the profound transformations that I have mapped in the first part.
