At the biennial Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF), hosted in Dublin, and assembling more than 5000 leading researchers and influential scientists from Europe and around the World, Serageldin chaired the Africa-Europe Partnership Symposium: Science for Economic Development. On the panel, were two outstanding speakers from Africa, and two from Europe: Naledi Pandor, Minister of Science and Technology, South Africa; Romain Murenzi, Executive Director, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS); Robert-Jan Smits, Research DG, European Commission, Belgium; and Lidia Brito, Director, Division of Science Policy and Sustainable Development, UNESCO. This major high-profile event within ESOF2012, brought together the best of African and European vision, experience and science on this topic. The symposium was one of four important global Partnership Symposia, with India, China, U.S.A, and Africa.
ESOF showcases the latest advances in science and technology, and aims to promote a dialogue on the role of science and technology in society and public policy. It is held under the auspices of Euroscience, a European association open to research professionals, teachers, students, science administrators, and policy-makers.
