A Meeting with the Partners of the World Digital Library

Serageldin today joins the partners of the World Digital Library (WDL) for the Inaugural Annual Partner Meeting. During the two-day meeting the partners will review the recent developments and discuss the future challenges of the WDL project. The meeting is opened by James H. Billington, The Librarian of Congress; Abdul Waheed Khan, Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, UNESCO; and Ismail Serageldin.

Towards Enhanced US-Muslim Collaborations

Following a preparatory workshop held at the Divinity School of Yale University in February 2010, the international conference Initiatives in Education, Science and Culture Towards Enhanced US- Muslim Countries Collaborations opened today at the BA with delegations of writers, politicians, journalists, moderate clergy and youth, from the US, Canada, and Islamic countries.

The Jury Meets with the Experts Committee

Once again, Serageldin meets with the Jury Committee members of the Fondation Chirac to select this year’s winner of the Fondation Chirac Prize for the Prevention of Conflicts. During the meeting, an international Committee of Experts, after having identified potential conflict zones and compiled all the various peace efforts, submits to the Prize Jury a list of individuals or institutions who have contributed to creating dialogue between opposition.

The American Constitution in Cairo Salon

The weekly Cairo Salon TV Show, presented by Ismail Serageldin, devotes two episodes to the American Constitution. The first part is aired on Channel One on Friday, 11 June 2010, at 8:30 pm.

Interview with Serageldin in IM Magazine

During Serageldin’s visit to Sweden for the 5th Global YES Summit, he was interviewed by Mariana Tavares for IM Magazine. He spoke about the rebirth of the ancient Library of Alexandria, and its role as a bridge between past and present. The interview also broached other topics – imagination, vision, and development.

The Openings and Opportunities for the Jobs of Tomorrow

The 5th Global YES (Youth Entrepreneurship and Sustainability) Summit - Rework the World, was this year held in partnership with the Tällberg Foundation, and LSU, The National Council of Swedish Youth Organization. The Summit gathered 2000 entrepreneurs and decision makers from all over the world and focused on 100 carefully selected ventures from around the globe, which could provide the jobs of tomorrow.

Creating the Concept of Shared Value

At the second Creating Shared Value Forum, Nestlé and the International Business Leaders’ Forum, with the participation of the UN Office for Partnerships, brought together international leading experts in the areas of nutrition, water and rural development to discuss the challenges facing the world in these areas, and the role of business in solving them.

Discussing Summer Activities with Youth Network

As a board member of the Suzanne Mubarak Women's International Peace Movement (SMWIPM), Serageldin was invited to join the board for a meeting called for by HE Suzanne Mubarak, First Lady of Egypt and Chairman of SMWIPM. The purpose of the meeting, which was held on 25th May at the SMWIPM site, was to meet with some of the members of International Youth Network and to discuss the agenda for their upcoming summer activities.

Pursuing Solutions to the Challenges of Carrying Capacity

The 2010 annual Meeting of the WANA Forum, which convened this year under the framework of Pursuing Supranational Solutions to the Challenges of Carrying Capacity, was inaugurated by HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal of Jordan, WANA Forum Chairman, and Yohei Sasakawa, Chairman of The Nippon Foundation, and opened with an overview by Ismail Serageldin on Transcending Regional Carrying Capacity.

Cairo Salon Discusses the Culture of the Mashreq and Maghreb

The weekly Cairo Salon TV show, presented by Serageldin, dedicates a special episode to the issue of the culture of the Mashreq and Maghreb (eastern and western Arab countries). The episode will be aired on Friday, 16 April 2010, at 20:30 hrs, on Egyptian TV Channel One.

BioVisionAlexandria 2010 Comes to a Close

BioVisionAlexandria 2010 Conference came to a close on Thursday, 15 April 2010. Titled “New Life Sciences: Future Prospects”, BVA 2010 was organized by the BA Center for Special Studies and Programs (CSSP), with around 1980 participants from different scientific fields and backgrounds.

In a meeting of the Réseau Francophone Numérique (RFN) - Francophone Digital Network - held at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France (BnF), Serageldin will join the directors of 15 RFN member libraries from around the world, to discuss a number of issues on the RFN agenda.

In November 2009 the Bibliothèque nationale de France BnF), in partnership with the Cultural Council of the Union for the Mediterranean (UPM) and the SNCF (French National Railways), donated half a million books to the BA.

A Keynote Speech at the Fulbright Commission

Invited by the Fulbright Commission in Egypt to be the sole keynote speaker at the Commission’s regional conference on science and technology in North Africa and the Middle East, Serageldin will give a presentation on “Promoting Greater Engagement in Science and Technology”. The commission’s invitation to Serageldin comes with high esteem of his tireless role in nourishing and disseminating knowledge in Egypt.

Serageldin Awarded Lifetime Africa Achievement Prize

A distinguished delegation from Ghana arrived today in Serageldin’s office, as directed by HRM Otumfo Osei Tutu II, King of Ashanti, the biggest tribe in Ghana, to announce to Serageldin that he has been chosen for the Lifetime Africa Achievement Prize 2010.

Addressing the Priorities and Concerns of US-Muslim Relations

In his speech addressed to the Muslim world in Cairo on 4 June 2009, President Obama highlighted the urgent need for communication and genuine dialogue between Muslims and the US in order to develop a sense of mutual trust between the two. He spoke of “change” or “a new beginning”.

As a renowned expert on water issues, Serageldin is invited by the Alberta Water Research Institute (AWRI) to give three talks on The Impact of Climate Change on Water Issues, as part of their Celebrating Fresh Ideas speakers’ series.

A Full Theatre at the Supreme Council of Culture

The theatre hall of the Supreme Council of Culture was completely full, on the evening of the 7th of February, as many prominent personalities as well as a great number of young people attended Serageldin’s lecture entitled The Seven Pillars of the Knowledge Revolution.

On the Values of Islamic Enlightenment - in Al-Ahram

Serageldin wrote an article in Al-Ahram on the values of the enlightenment as reflected in the reformist movements in Islam in the last 200 years, and on the importance of reviving that humanist and caring tradition in a time where many young people do not know enough about that side of their heritage and intolerant voices are claiming to speak for Islam.

At the Euro-Mediterranean Innovation Marketplace, held from 26 to 28 January, under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Ahmed Nazif, Prime Minister of Egypt, Serageldin will give a keynote speech in a session entitled Science Communications: Challenges and Opportunities for the Euro-Mediterranean.

As one of the governance participants of the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL), Serageldin meets today with the other members of the EOL to discuss its future governance, and to recommend a governance model that fosters international participation.

Serageldin in Paris for TWAS Steering Committee Meeting

Serageldin will today attend the fourth meeting of the Steering Committee of The Academy of Sciences in the Developing World (TWAS). Members of the Steering Committee will convene at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris to report on 2009 activities and to discuss a work plan for 2010. Serageldin is Vice President of TWAS for the Arab World.

2009 29 December

BA Receives the First Shipment of the French Donation

At the harbour of Alexandria, Serageldin and General Adel Labib, Governor of Alexandria, together received the first shipment of the half million French books, sent as a gift from the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) to the BA. Last November Serageldin had been guest of honor at a ceremony that took place at Marseille, celebrating the departure of this shipment at the gare du Canet.

Martin Scorsese… The Legendary Film Director at the BA

In a BA event attended by a number of movie stars from Egypt and the Arab world, Serageldin interviewed Martin Scorsese, the legendary Film Director, and engaged with him in a dialogue on film as an art form, on the influences that shaped Scorsese’s passion for cinema as a child, the making of some of his favorite films, his techniques, as well as his endeavor in the World Cinema Foundation. The event was widely attended by fans of Scorsese and lovers of cinema.

The Cable News Network (CNN) airs a special episode about the BA, a beacon for knowledge and culture in the Arab world, and a worldwide landmark of civilization. The TV program entitled Inside the Middle East interviewed Serageldin for an episode to be aired on 6 January 2010.

Mrs. Mubarak Honors Dr. Boutros Boutros Ghali at the BA

Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, Chair of the BA Board of Trustees, visited the BA on Monday, 14 December 2009, to attend a ceremony honoring Dr. Boutros Boutros Ghali, Former UN Secretary General, in recognition of his generous donation to the Library. Dr. Ghali valuable donation included an original copy of Description de l’Egypte, in addition to his personal archive of photos, documents and other material related to his term of office as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and UN Secretary General.

Serageldin Receives Honorary Doctorate from Trinity College

Serageldin was awarded an honorary doctorate from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, on Friday 11 December 2009. He received his parchment from University Chancellor Mary Robinson. Trinity College Public Orator Professor Anna Chahoud described Serageldin as a humanist, a scientist, an educator, a leader: a truly Alexandrian scholar”.
