STS Plenary Session Speech “Summaries from Concurrent Sessions”

Speech at Plenary Session “Summaries from Concurrent Sessions” - Summarizing Track D Concurrent Sessions, Third Annual Meeting of the STS forum, Kyoto, Japan

The Three sessions that I am reporting on dealt with Science literacy for all; universities in the 21st century; and science and technology for/in developing countries. The discussions were very rich. Some issues such as IPR, the digital divide and the gender dimension were recurring background themes but have been formally addressed in other sessions.

Science: The Culture of Living Change

The material in this book is part of my ongoing quest for the improvement of science and education in the Muslim and Arab worlds generally and in Egypt particularly. In the face of mounting currents of obscurantism, fanaticism and irrationality, it is essential that we promote rationality, skepticism and the joy of learning. Advancing the values of science is critical if science itself is to flourish. The four documents included here have different histories.

STS Plenary Session Summation

Speech at Plenary Session “Summaries from Concurrent Sessions”, Kyoto, Japan

The wisdom to create that better world to which we are all committed.

Public Health and Private Medicine: Looking Back and Looking Forward

Alexandria, Egypt

It is a very distinct pleasure to welcome you here, to the Library of Alexandria, reborn after an absence of 1600 years. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina’s ambition is to once more bring world-class learning, intellectual dialogue and scientific discourse to the very spot where the ancient Library of Alexandria once stood.

Women in Science: Time to Recognize the Obvious

An Address Delivered at the UN Information Office to the Meeting of The Women in Science International League, London, UK

It is a great pleasure to address this group about the issues confronted by women in the practice of science.

The Challenge of Today and Tomorrow: Mobilizing Science to Serve the Poor

Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Lecture

I am deeply touched by this opportunity to deliver the Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Lecture. Like my twenty-three predecessors, I consider it a special privilege to join you in paying tribute to the memory of a world-renowned figure who is affectionately remembered as India’s "gentle leader." He was a leader of great compassion. He was, at the same time, unrelenting in his commitment to building peace and prosperity.
