Keynote Speech at NCL in Taipei

18/04/2013 | Taipei

To celebrate its 80th anniversary, the National Central Library (NCL) in Taipei held an international conference under the theme “A New Paradigm for Globalized Knowledge and Library Development”. The directors of national libraries throughout the world and scholars and experts from Taiwan were invited to speak at the conference. Following the opening ceremony, which was attended by the President of Taiwan, Serageldin gave a keynote speech entitled “Rebirth and Revolution: The Story of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina”. He spoke of the challenge of recapturing the spirit of the ancient library in the context of the 21st century, and of the new challenges in the face of the present revolutionary turmoil in Egypt.

A set of commemorative stamps was issued for the occasion of the NCL 80th anniversary. Three sections of the fifteen-part stamp are dedicated to Serageldin and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. One part shows a photo of Serageldin lecturing, the second shows the magnificent reading hall of the BA, and the third is an external view of the BA landmark building.
