In Ganja, Azerbaijan, home of the ancient Azeri poet Nizami Ganjavi, Serageldin co-chaired, together with Abulfaz Garayev, Minister of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan, an international conference dedicated to the 870th Anniversary of the poet. Among the eminent speakers at the conference were Vaira Vike-Freiberga, former President of Latvia and Roza Otunbayeva, former President of Kyrgyzstan. The conference publications bore the logo of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
On the occasion, a new International Center named after Nizami Ganjavi was inaugurated and a festival and special cultural performance were held at the Mausoleum of the ancient romantic poet . A Nizami Ganjavi art exhibition, which includes original manuscript leaves, was inaugurated by Ismail Serageldin, Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Mayor of Ganja City, and Minister of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan.
