Nizami Bust Unveiling Ceremony

A bust of Azerbaijan’s prominent poet Nizami Ganjavi, donated to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) by the state of Azerbaijan, was unveiled today in a ceremony held by the BA and  the Nizami Ganjavi International Center (NGIC). The event was attended by Hany Al-Messiry, Governor of Alexandria, Govhar Bakhshali-yeva, Member of the Azerbaijani Parliament and Head of the Oriental Studies Institute of the Russian Academy of Science, Petar Stefanov, former President of Bulgaria, Emil Constantinescu, former President of Romania, Rexhep Meidani, former President of Albania, Andrés Pastrana Arango, former President of Colombia, Boris Tadic, former President of Serbia, Willem Kok, former Prime Minister of Netherlands,  and Shahin Abdullayev, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Egypt. As Co-chair of the NGIC and Director of the BA, as well as a  great admirer of the ancient poet, Serageldin opened the ceremony with an eloquent speech on the poetry of the “Magnificent Sage”, as he calls him. The ceremony also saw the launch of an Arabic book  entitled “Nizami Ganjavi, the Poet of Wisdom, his Age, Environment, and Poetry” , a re-issue of the massive work by the late Professor Abd Al-Naeem Hassanein with a new introduction by Serageldin.

 

Established in 2012 on the 870th anniversary of the ancient Azeri poet Nizami Ganjavi, the NGIC is a cultural center promoting the heritage of Nizami. Its projects include publishing, re-editing and translating the works of the famous poet.
