22/04/2008 | Alexandria

As board member of the Beacon for Freedom of Expression, Serageldin hosted a meeting of the board at the BA. In his inaugural address he called on the audience to battle for freedom of expression, and live in harmony regardless of income, beliefs or political ideas. The Beacon for Freedom of Expression project is dedicated to and in honor of the Library of Alexandria. It is managed by an international board in collaboration with the Norwegian National Library. Its database contains over 50,000 bibliographical entries on freedom of expression and censorship, and censored books and newspapers through the ages. The board discussed the importance of translating the material in the database into Arabic , as well as registering Arabic documents – a task which will be funded by The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign affairs.
