It is wonderful to get back to Indnesia, the largest Muslim majority Country in the World (with over 270 million population), and a progressive democracy that has once before elected a woman as head of state (Megawati Soekarnoputri . Indonesia has a rich and diversified culture, with the biggest Buddhist temple in the world (Borobudur), and many famous beautiful locations (e.g. Bali).
It is a very large country composed of over 3000 islands stretching over a distance larger than the continental USA, and with some of the richest biodiversity on earth, including some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world.
Jakarta with almost 10 million people in the city proper and some 30 million people in the metropolitan area is one of the biggest and most congested cities in the world. About 40% of Jakarta lies below sea level and much of it is built on swampy land… And – as wells are drawn down – some parts are sinking at a rate of 20 centimeters a year. They intend to move the administrative capital from Jakarta to Borneo (Kalimantan) which is also well protected from earthquakes and tsunamis.
Indonesia has some of the most beautiful corals in the world, and they too are at risk as are those in nearby Australia’s great barrier reef.
