The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) is holding a workshop on “Models of Extremism” at Birmingham University on 28-29 November 2016. Serageldin will give the opening speech entitled “Extremism, Violence and Social Change”. It is worth mentioning that the BA has pledged to confront extremism through conferences, discussions, research and activities aimed at combatting this global destructive phenomenon. To this end an annual conference on extremism was launched by the BA in January 2015, the efforts and outcome of which were praised by the President of Egypt, Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi at the annual meeting of BA Board of Trustees, which is chaired by the Egyptian President. Serageldin tirelessly gives talks worldwide on this issue and has written an essay representing his reflections on “challenging the extremist currents in our midst”. In January 2016 American weekly news magazine Newsweek featured an article by Serageldin on “Crafting Stability” in the Middle East.
